Don’t Worry, Be Happy

Let me set the scene here. It’s almost midnight. You’re exhausted both physically and mentally. You can’t even keep your eyes open. You long to fall asleep, but your mind is wide awake. Instead of falling into a much needed slumber, your mind is consumed with worrisome thoughts about every little and big thing in your life. Does that sound like you? I know that scenario is often my reality. If you’re anything like me, worry just might be consuming your life.

What does the Bible say about worrying?

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV)

The Bible commands us to not be anxious or worry about ANYTHING. According to scripture, any worry that you might have, be it trivial or major, is not worth having and shouldn’t be dwelled upon because worry harms our hearts, minds, and lives.

What am I supposed to do if I shouldn’t worry?

Philippians 4:6-7 makes it very clear. Instead of worrying, we are called to PRAY. Whenever an anxious thought comes to mind, we are supposed to bring it before God and trust in Him. Whenever we lift our worry and anxiety to God, we open our hearts up for Him to replace those thoughts and feelings with His peace.

What is so special about the peace of God?

There are two types of peace- worldly peace and God’s peace. Worldly peace is a falsified and temporary version of peace that most people attempt to have. Worldly peace comes from feeling in control, feeling like we can figure our problems out, and attempting to rationalize everything. When we feel out of control, don’t have any solutions to our problems, or can’t make sense of a situation, there is no peace for us in this world. That is exactly why we need God’s peace. God‘s peace is true peace and not temporary. It goes much deeper than rationale and doesn’t change based off of feelings or circumstances. According to Philippians 4:6-7, God‘s peace transcends all understanding. His peace is rooted in Him- the greatest power of all. His peace is so wonderful because even when our lives feel like they are falling apart or when we feel so out of control or like we don’t have the answers, our spirits can still be at peace because of God‘s supernatul peace. His peace protects our hearts, minds, and lives.

Takeaway:

Do NOT worry about ANYTHING. Instead, pray and lift your worries up to God. You can exhaust yourself and worry your life away, or you can trust in God and be blessed with His peace- the best and only true peace in this world!
