Achieving Your 2020 Goals: Appreciate Your Now

I have always struggled with being present in the moment. Like many of you, I’m always thinking about the future. Rarely do I ever soak up and enjoy where I’m at because I’m constantly thinking about how I’m not where I want to be yet.

Living in the future really becomes a problem for me whenever I’m working towards a goal. Instead of being proud of the progress I may be making towards achieving my goal, I tend to stress out about how I haven’t reached my goal yet or how far I have left to go. Living in the future becomes very discouraging and has even overwhelmed me so much in the past to the extent that I just give up on my goals.

Being that it’s the time of year when most of the world is setting goals, I’ve really been thinking about this issue that I have with living in the future. God has really revealed to me the importance of being present and not worrying about the future.

It’s no secret that living in the future can steal your joy and discourage you. This topic is discussed many times throughout the Bible. God’s Word instructs us time and time again to not worry about the future. It also reminds us that God’s peace is with us, so there is no need to worry, stress, and give way to anxiety in our lives.

I want to encourage you all to keep these things in mind as you begin this new year of working towards all of your goals. If your goal is to understand the Bible better, do not be discouraged when you still struggle with the language of the Bible on your fifth day of working towards understanding the Bible better. Instead, be proud that you are trying and continue praying for God’s help and trusting that He will help you achieve your goal in His timing. If your goal is to become more fit and healthy, do not be discouraged by how hard it is at first or by how far you have to go to achieve your fitness goals. Instead, be proud of your continuous effort and of your tiny, daily achievements and continue to ask God to help and encourage you in your journey. Trust God and the process in whatever you may be trying to accomplish and you will get to where you want to be eventually!

You would be surprised how much more you can achieve whenever you adjust your mindset and approach to align with God’s Word! This new approach to my goals has been so beneficial in my life, and I hope that it can encourage you in your efforts this year!
